Deco Table Jules Leleu

A wonderful two-tiered occasional table attributed to the french master of deco furniture, Jules Leleu (1883-1961). Fine walnut veneer with chrome pillars.

Jules Leleu was a French sculptor and designer from Bologne-sur-mer.  He studied at the 'Academie des Beaux-Arts' with Theophile Deman and also at a private academy in Brussels and at the 'Ecole Jean Goujon' and 'Ecole des Arts Appliques' in Paris. In 1901 he and his brother, Marcel, took over their father’s painting business and Jules began working as an interior designer. Shortly after World War I, Jules opened his own interior design studio and furniture workshop in Paris, while also maintaining his cabinet-making workshops in Boulogne.

Leleu may never have achieved the same international fame as his contemporaries like Jean Michel Frank or Le Corbusier, however he was appraised by the international press for his high level of marquetry and craftmanship. His designs were simple with minimal embellishments and he received commissions to design for official and semi official government buildings as well as designing the interiors for over twenty of the great French ocean liners.  He showed his design work at 'Societe des Artistes Francais' in 1922 and later at 'Salon Societe des Artistes Decorateurs', 'Salon d’Automne' and 'Salon des Tuileries'.

Some clouding to the veneer top and marks of age to the chrome pillars. Solid and stable and in great antique condition.
